Najaf - the end of the resistance or the beginning of uprising?

bbc has reported that the US led troups are preparing to enter the Shiite city of Najaf. Long being regarded as a wholy city by the Arabic Shiites a large scale battle could result in even further anti-"coalition" movements within the whole of the arabic world. At the heart of the dispute stands the mausoleum of Imam Ali, considered by Shiites as the successor of Prophet Mohammed. Today, Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned the coalition forces that "The Muslim nation and the Iraqi people will not pardon these atrocities and the Iraqi nation will react with virulence." Najaf's governour, who asked the US to help free the city of Al Sadr militants said that coalition forces are to "stop in Midan Square," on the edge of the district. "If we decide to go into the old city, this will be the job of Iraqi police and soldiers." Yet according to US headquarters, US forces will not stop at anything in trying to win the fight against rebel forces (good old prpaganda CNN however say that they will stop and leave it to Iraqi solidiers: "U.S. military sources said the military is considering sending Iraqi, rather than U.S., forces into the compound").
