J os kicks azz..

While apple is concentrating of creating the smallest player with the largest memory.. and leaving little time for other intresting functions...

Jens of Sweden turns up to see what people actually want..

40 gigs for mp3s? hmm let me see.. hmm what should i listen to hmm... hmm.. argh.. wwill just listen toxic again...

for me it was already enough when i had 5 gigs in my first ipod.. and back then that was also too much..

Jens of Sweden presents us with a new model.. the MP-300;
one on slim -fast 256mb and another vollkorn with salty butter 512mb version.. both in the same design shell.

This thing is not only an mp3 player.. some cool functions are:

- direct-record to the player from your soundsystem/md/other soundsource without even touchig a computer; via line in.. and the JoS player stores the music in super high quality of 224kbps (or lower if prefered) mp3 realtime...

- an FM TRANSMITTER (yes thats right) built in.. this means that you can transmit at FM 91.0 mhz.. tune your radio at home or in the car to that frequency and hear the music from the player.. (although this is apparently illegal in europe.. but can still easily be done)

- fm reciever.. to listen to regular radio on the player itself..

- 26 hours playback.. and this with a single AA battery that you obiously can replace ;-)

- mic-in, so you can record a seminar, conference, band rehersal in higher quality.

and the coolest feature.. combining two of the features..
- using the mic-in and the fm transmitter.. at the same time..

so.. what does this do :-) well that means you can broadcast yourself on a commercial radio channel... and talk to people who are trying to listen to some specific radio show.. when driving for instance.. you could talk in to the radio of the car next to you..

this would be highly illegal ofcourse.. in europe.. but fun anywhere...

if you buy it from the states it includes the FM tranmitter antenna.. and it´s much cheaper than buying it from sweden..

it has become yet another "candian goose" item for the swedish incrowd... and jens knows it.. and loves it...

works on Mac and PC!

$219 for 256mb and $299 for 512mb

[sidenote.. i would have prefered his logo to be a little more 8bit.. ]

summer´s almost here folks

I believe that in Italy you are allowed to broadcast as much as you like

get rid of that stupid shitty icon-picture-signlanguage-whatmeansthat?-useless-interface ...and i'll buy one!

just can't stand this icon-desease anymore.

words! letters! types! ...would be soooo much easier and faster.

big ups, ipod! your interface will carry me through day and night... (i don't really have one)

... Link

i wonder what this ipod icon means..

it´s the icon that´s becoming more & more common on the ipod when you start it..

and if you look at the picture above the selected icon means browse.. which is exactly what it says in the text above it..

people who have used the ipod menu system know as well that it´s complicated, and that the "go back" feature is really shit the way its implemented

... Link

Text letters and types are for graphic designers!

... Link

That icon takes me back to the days when Mac Classics used to pull an unhappy face when there was a boot problem. Now that was OS design!

... Link

so why is there text AND and icon, br0?

hm?

bastard, didn't know that only graphic designers can read! this chances a lot in my work proces... ;-)

... Link

text and icons so you know wher you are.. so you can see that there are more functions than just "browse" for instance... actually very logical.. i believe macs use the same concept

..oh yes before i forget.. the reason in this case; it´s also for transparency.. no scrolling needed..

i see, i see...

another company that steals the good ideas from apple.

poor, very poor...

yup, still want one!

... Link

and apple stole it from xerox.. just before they created lisa.. and yes they also stole the idea of the mouse from them..

... Link

They didn't so much steal it as take advantage of Xerox research. The ideas were freely demonstrated at Xerox PARC, Apple just implemented them in a publicly available system.

... Link

to me in this case it´s the same thing.. (take advantage of their research / steal their ideas) and as far as i know xerox showed it to steve jobs and steve wozniak in a closed company demonstration meeting, which makes it beyond obvious..

and every piece of gadget you see today, whether it´s a gps system, a digital camera, projector, tv, video camera, synth, touchscreen ticket machine.. etc uses icons.. i doubt that the fact that apple implemented them in their system over 20 years ago would change the gui´s of the gadgets we have today.

I am wishing to float turds down a river at all of you

... Link

and..

did you know that it was a black guy working for apple who sang the songs that everyone thoght were milli vanilli´s?

they actually didn´t sing them it was him.. they just posed on the cover and did playback performances.

weird coincidence huh?

Br0

Good point re: the designs of 20 years ago not affecting current designs.

But going back to Apple and PARC, to the best of my recollection the ideas were presented as just that. R&D by Xerox had provided 'proof-of-concept' designs, but it was Apple that took the ideas/designs and melded them all together with other programming to form the first implementation of a GUI which was then made available to the public. I think if Xerox thought that Apple had 'stolen' their ideas, they would have had a little more to say to them about it (via the courts). Instead I get the distinct impression that giving them to somebody else to implement was pretty much the whole idea...

Having said all that, I've done no research on the matter so I could be entirely mistaken.

the gui was already functional when they showed it to the steves.. and yes in retrospect xerox were upset about showing it to them.. i am sure we can find a write up on that if we look...

The recent $150 million suit by Xerox against Apple Computer for copyright infringement demonstrates that issues related to software authorship remain a concern.

Because of the perceived importance of look and feel, there have been several legal actions claiming breech of copyright on the look and feel of user interfaces, most notably by Apple Computer against Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard (which Apple lost) and, later, by Xerox against Apple Computer. Such legal action attempts to force suppliers to make their interfaces inconsistent with those of other vendors' products.
