Can anyone tell me...
bastard

Why are both Intel and Micrsoft delaying their releases of the 64 bit technology? Microsoft has a beta version available and Intel has a server based chip... and its been like this for almost a half a year, while AMD,with the opteron, has had a working 64-bit chip out for almost a year. Furthermore Microsoft has released a SE2 eddition of the XP version suggesting that a final launch of the 64 bit platform will not be for at least a half a year. Can anyone explain this to me? I find it fasinating as this is a first. The semiconductor industry has almost frozen the last two years @ roughly 2,5 - 3,5 ghz. Are they waiting for complementaries or what? Please if anyone can enlighten me i will buy him/her a beer when i get back in 3 weeks time. ... Comment

It’s probably because of backwards compatibility. The nice thing about the AMD is it will run 32bit applications. Microsoft has to rewrite all their applications to run on the 64 bit platform. I have a dual Opteron running Linux and it works great. Most applications can just be recompiled for 64 bit and the ones that don’t want to compile can be compiled to 32 bit. :) -Stefan ... Link ...
