What the Elk???

OK so we are back from sweden, lovely lovely, amazing weather etc etc, photos will follow.

One point I have to make, though, is my severe disappointment when I finally saw an elk...

After finally figuring out what the difference between a moose and an elk is (americans call them moose, europeans call them elks - there is also an american elk but it doesnt look like the european one... or something like that)

Aaanyway, driving home in the early hours of the morning we finally saw one... I had been expecting something like this, the majestic king of the forests, surveying his domain...

BUT NO!!!

what confronted me was this

EEEK! it looked more like a rather beaten-up camel... it also moved in freakish slow motion. Urgh.

1st pix: elk (engl.) = hirsch (de.)
2nd pix: moose (engl.) = elch (de.)

what you saw is some kind of a female moose in her midlifecrisis. because i saw the same one about 12 years ago, also in sweden...

what you wanted to see is an elk (the american kind) and what you saw was a moose...any kind...sorry about the dissapointment

aha! but no...

the second picture IS an elk... if you are speaking uk english or german or swedish...

I have just been corrupted by the american elks (which the uk people call moose, and the germans call hirsch) which are slightly more attractive.

if anything it was a learning experience - both into the finer points of zoological classification and the potential ugliness of forest creatures, which are always depicted as cute and friendly, not motheaten and spaced out.

what is that thing?

It looks like it has a disease on its neck...

the elk on the Lower picture is female...! ;) So that you see a maaaasive male elk/moose whatever (both correct to me) here is an example

the lower picture on the post looks like an orthodox moose / elk whatever.. all that's missing's the hat & glasses!!

you are all zoological ignorants

read the first comment, trust me it's true... especially after chasing wildtiere for six month in the c-land.

Yes, copicat, but...

the engl. you refer to there is u.s. english, and the point i'm making is that u.s. and u.k. english is tooootally different.

What is a älj in swedish and an elch in german in also an elk in uk english, but a moose in u.s. english.

let's learn sign language
