Because firewire is Apple standard (originally developed by Apple). Simple business sense, make your standard used in as many devices as possible and it beats the competition. To be honest a lot of devices/laptops have started including firewire ports now... ... Link

but why use slower tech when it can be about 20% faster? and if they developed it, why didn't they make fw800 ports compatible with fw400? that's just plain stupid.. firewire was co-invented with sony btw.. hence vaio laptops being the first ones equipped with firewire ports as standard. ...
