Help needed....

Mil has been working on a problem... One of our users connects to an FTP server once a week. A couple of weeks ago she was unable to connet. Mil worked a whole afternoon, checking settings, passwords, etc. Nothing would work. He set-up a new computer for the user and it worked fine, until he changed the Network card. With the new network card the user has no FTP access.... Any idea why this happens? The only thing I could think off is that she has been blocked on our Firewall, with her MAC address(???)

that exact thing happened to my boss's server at work.. they blocked his MAC address.. ask the IT department.. ;-)

otherwise .. just use the oter network card..

Br0's got a point

but I'm assuming that's not why you posted the question...

I would have to agree with you that it looks to be a MAC problem. It is also possible that the network card you switched does not implement the protocols properly, but then it would have to be a non-IEEE standard card which is very unlikely...

Much more likely is that either your firewall, or the receiving server is blocking the session by MAC address. If it was your firewall I assume that you would have had to open the port in the first place. It is possible that the receiving server can block the session based on the fact that the MAC address is different but the IP is the same. This would be standard practice if you were worried about getting cracked as it prevents IP spoofing (though of course not MAC spoofing).

Try the FTP client connecting to another server (anything will do, even the blank media dump if it's got FTP) to ensure that it's not a problem on your side. If the connection and session run correctly, you have no problem, it's the receiving end. If you do have a problem then it's likely to do with your firewall or network setup.
