The current fastest using the 802.11 spec is 802.11g at 54mbps. 802.11a is about the same speed, but not backward compatible with 802.11b (which is what most of the current systems are). I would recommend shopping online at http://www.arp.ch. Their prices are good and in my experience it is literally next day delivery of the goods. Very impressive. They sell the APs, WLAN routers, PCI and PCMCIA cards for both a, b and g networks. Alternately you might want to hang around and wait for 802.11i which should be coming out soon I think...

some..

..little mouse whispered into my ear that a 110mbps wlan exists for the consumer market...

I've not heard of that speed based on the 802.11.x protocol but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist...

What do you need that much speed for? If you are going to use the wifi for internet then don't bother spending the extra cash.

g are just the same price as b pretty much (about 10 or 20 difference) unless you're buying second hand, so why not?

It's true that a lot of people forget that the bottle neck is the WAN not the WLAN, but at the end of the day, it still takes me about 15min to transfer an entire DivX movie from one PC to another on my WLAN, and that's at 54Mbps

For us it goes real fast sometimes and fucking slow sometimes.....

I'm still sceptical over the actual speed benefits, but...

http://www.usr.com/100Mbps/

It's important to note that it only achieves acceleration between USR devices, no others... So far they're the only company to offer this 'turbo' so I'm quite sceptical of it's actual benefit. It also means, because of the greater packet size, and any interference will result in much slower performance. In an ideal setup it would probably be good, but otherwise...

well..

what are the cons... it doesn't cost much more than a 54mbps AP / PCMCIA / PCI Card...

i was planning to use only USR devices in that case

check prices on www.stegpc.ch 99.90 chf for a PCMCIA card..
199.90 for the AP...

and it got these:

and all those are from this months magazines..

Sounds like you've made your mind up then! Make sure you have a device on your network capable of routing though, otherwise you might find it very difficult for multiple PCs to use the WAN connection...

the usr AP has a router.. i don't get what you are trying to say here..

Not trying to say anything, I hadn't looked at the specs of the USR AP so I had no idea if it had a router or not. Just thought I'd point it out... Some stupid people in our building try to setup APs as routers and then wonder why they cannot access the DSL connection...

the little mouse

is very happy about all discussions this has caused..he he..anyway I am goig to buy one, so then I can tell you if it works ok. or not....
