on behalf of NME.. this is the short article on my friends up north! THE UNISEX Outside Stockholm freezes in sub-zero snowdrifts, but down in the basement of Club Love rock is re-heating nicely. It may not be their Scadi-majesties The Hives and The Soundtrack Of Our Lives request, but native sons The Unisex are here to lay claim to their retro-crown. Dishevelled around him, the band thrash furiously through songs where a glacial tunefulness comes as standard. As cartoonish as The Hives but with the lysergic twist of Soundtrack, The Unisex sound like the young Stone Roses rehearsing on an Iceberg. If these songs were drinks they’d be triple snowballs with just a hint of sambuca. Girls become giddy; boys roar for more. Sensible debut single ‘Take Me Higher’ will impress the radio people, but elsewhere lurk acid-tinged song titles which would do considerable damage to a starving man playing scrabble; ‘Mushrooms & Broccoli’, ‘Sweeter Than Sugar’.
