...they can swim, but usually float around on their sides close to the sea surface in order to conserve energy. which, i agree, is not a very smart way to avoid being caught and eaten.

Apparently it's only the chinese and other weird peoples (finns?) who eat them, as the meat is vaguely toxic (like the puffer fish but not as exciting) and it doesn't taste very good.
