Foreigners could be forced to take Language Classes
The federal government decided on Wednesday to take actions for foreigners to be better integrated into Switzerland before they obtain residency permits. The measures will come into force on February 1st and could include mandatory language classes. The federal department of justice and police explained that the new ordinance on integration now explicitly mentions contributions by foreigners themselves. When foreigners ask for a renewal of their residency permit, authorities will study the person’s degree of integration.

A civil servant will judge whether the person asking for residency requires language classes or lessons in Swiss culture. The respect of law and of democratic principles, as well as a proven interest in getting a job or an education will now become mandatory requirements to obtain a residency permit. If officials decide the foreigner fails to meet the integration criteria, the residency application can be blocked and the person booted out of the country.
