The 2001 census is the first survey to ask the question about religion and found 71.7% of people in England and Wales described themselves as Christian.

The number of married couples showed a significant decline, making up 50.7% of the adult population, compared with 68% in 1971.

Following an internet campaign, more than 390,000 people described their religion as Jedi Knight.

With 0.7% of the population inspired by the Star Wars movie, Jedi was a bigger religious group in the 2001 Census than Sikhism, Judaism and Buddism.

An Office for National Statistics (ONS) spokesman said the Star Wars fans had stated their faith as "Jedi" in the mistaken belief that if 10,000 did so it would be recognised as an official religion.
